Proverbs 4 entreats us "Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.

The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding." In our 'first Sunday' communion service (with help from our young people), Jamie continues our series on prayer by exploring the place of wisdom and spiritual maturity in our discipleship.

Learning to Breathe. As we continue our study into the wider world of prayer and nurturing our spiritual lives, Jamie explores how we might think about 'practice' and 'training' in this area. Should prayer simply be innate or intuitive? Or is it something we need to learn, a skill to be developed? In this talk, Alister uses some wonderful illustrations to express the ways we all struggle with how we prioritise our time. Instead of us trying to satisfy the world with the use of our time, he highlights how Jesus is the ‘King of Time Management’, calling us to lean into him and his time to find peace, space and purpose.

The beginning of a new year feels like an appropriate time to reflect on our spiritual lives, and consider how we might enrich and deepen them. Starting a new series in which we will specifically be exploring ‘prayer’, Jamie asks whether we may have inherited some profoundly unhelpful ideas from our culture about what ‘spirituality’ even is. And if we have, we might need to build again ‘from the ground up’.

Richard starts the New Year continuing the theme that we have been looking at through the Christmas season. Despite the trials and difficulties we face in an imperfect world, the promise given to Joseph by the Angel is still true: Jesus is 'Immanuel'! God is with us... and that has profound implications for how we see ourselves and how we live life.

Our teaching series, 'A Perfect Christmas' reaches a conclusion as we acknowledge that 'The World is Not Perfect'. The story of Mary and Joseph is suddenly caught up in international power plays and ruthless political manoeuvring. Such 'worldly' goings on may seem a million miles from the Nativity stable scene; but Jesus came to announce a new kingdom and a new king to the princes and powers of this Earth.

As we continue to unpack our theme of 'A Perfect Christmas?', Jamie ponders the difficult situations, crises, tragedies and unlooked-for events which pepper our lives. The things that happen to us are not perfect... to say the least! In the Nativity story, Joseph was suddenly plunged into God's plans, in very unsettling circumstances. Jamie explores how his example of character and faithfulness demonstrate many things that can benefit us in similar situations.

This week we kick off our teaching series for the festive season, 'A Perfect Christmas?' which will be based in the nativity story of Matthew's Gospel. In so much Christmas imagery, advertising, stories, music and movies we are reminded of our culture's desire for a 'magical' and 'perfect' Christmas. Jamie asks whether our yearning for connection and wonder is at best misplaced, and at worse, a source of unnecessary stress. Matthew's Jesus story begins by painting a very different kind of picture: a context of scandal, trouble and strife in which we find very human and relatable people. We discover a God who seems very willing to work with people in all of their mess and 'imperfection'.

On this first Sunday in Advent, we welcomed a visiting speaker, Rev Philip Amos. Philip was minister at New Life Church Worthing for 10 years, and will soon begin serving at Bushey Baptist Church. 

Apparently, surveys suggest that the three most popular phrases to hear are "I love you", "I forgive you" and ... "Supper's Ready"! Philip Explains how these three are actually a perfect summary of the gospel message, and invites us to go on an 'Advent-ure' as we approach the Christmas season.
