In all the business and competing demands of life, Jesus offers a radically different perspective: a way of life he describes as "easy" and "light". Even for folks who are trying to follow Jesus, life doesn't always feel that way! Is it too good to be true? What would be the hallmarks of such a life? What might we need to change in order to experience this?⁠

Jesus urged his followers to ‘take up their cross’ and follow him, and spoke of ‘denying’ themselves. Is this a program of dismal puritanism, austerity, or even self-hatred? On the contrary, the writer to the Hebrews shows us that the way of Christ takes us beyond the cross to a bigger mission, vision and calling described as ‘Joy’! This week Nick reflects on a subject we’ve (hopefully!) all got in common - breathing! We consider what the Bible and science has to say about breathing, and the value of doing intentional breathing practices to nurture our spiritual, physical and mental wellbeing. How do they cohere with older stories, especially the story the Bible tells? And which set of values is more healthy, realistic and helpful?

In Acts 16 we read how, while in Philippi, Paul and Silas witness God's power to overcome the evils that hold people captive. Not all prisons have bars, and sometimes we can turn a blind eye to the systems that underwrite these evils.
Wrapping up this leg of our ongoing study through Acts, Jamie reflects on how God's miraculous power blossoms from the soil of counter-cultural faith, love and compassion.

Having considered an overview of woman in the Bible in part one of talk, this week Nick delves into the story of Lydia in Acts 16. We look at the way this passage and the person of Lydia highlights how unconventional being a Christian is, and that God calls us to live out our faith in ways that challenge society’s norms.
