Message: Living in Peace - Jamie Fredricks

For Remembrance Sunday, we reflected on the specific themes of this important day in the light of our current series exploring the nature of a Christian community.

Conflict is an inescapable part of life; But Scripture offers us some powerful tools to deal with it, and in doing so, perhaps offer a hope-filled witness to the world. In this vein, Jamie looked at some important verses from Matthew 18, that challenge us to combine an inclusive and loving vision of community with mutual accountability.

Message: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - Nick Drury

This week Nick shares from Jesus’ parables about the wedding banquet in Luke and Matthew. He highlights how often we forget that the Kingdom of God is a party, and that Christian communities should be foretaste of this. We talk about how these parables remind us that EVERYONE is welcome into God’s Kingdom, and that we are challenged to do the welcoming and not the judging of those who join our community.

The context of celebrating a marriage in our community, is the perfect opportunity to reflect on some of the principles that Scripture points us to, as we continue to explore how a fellowship can be formed as those who are able to 'walk together in love'! Love is no trivial thing: We need to go deep into this call and wrestle wisely with the challenges and costs it presents. Yet it is absolutely foundational to any community of Jesus followers. Love is the ‘yeast in the dough’, not ‘the icing on the cake’. Jamie offers some reflections on how we keep our balance through all this, as well as some practical advice and suggestions.

Is the church community best understood by the boundaries that it creates around itself, or by its direction of travel? Jamie unpacks two models of thinking about 'the fellowship', looking at the example of Jesus in his 'Nazareth Manifesto' from Luke ch4. We look at the extreme caution which the Bible demonstrates about judging by outward appearances, and instead consider a more personal vision of responsibility and journeying towards Jesus.
