How can we begin to understand what God is like? The Bible describes “the way God is” by pointing out aspects of God’s character and behaviour. We can say “God is Love” – but what does that mean in practice? In Psalm 23 there’s a clue: Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. The word “follow” actually means more than you might think- it means to chase, to pursue, to never give up or fade away.
Jesus demonstrates this beautifully in John 4 as he talks with a woman who has had a difficult life. Does he criticise or condemn? No! He breaks down the barriers and introduces her to real Love, generous and kind. It’s the everlasting compassionate lovingkindness that welcomes all who will come near…

Message: The Light Shines in the Darkness - Richard Starling

Jesus urged his followers to ‘take up their cross’ and follow him, and spoke of ‘denying’ themselves. Is this a program of dismal puritanism, austerity, or even self-hatred? On the contrary, the writer to the Hebrews shows us that the way of Christ takes us beyond the cross to a bigger mission, vision and calling described as ‘Joy’! But what is the biblical idea of 'Joy', and how does it guide each of us towards our purpose and calling?
