Message: The Gods Among Us (Jamie Fredricks)
As we follow the unfolding adventures of Paul and Barnabas we see a familiar pattern of elements: miracles, declaration amongst the Jewish community, a mixture of acceptance and resistance, and the impact of the gospel amongst the gentiles. Once again we see how the 'religious impulse' bursts out of people in diverse, and sometimes unhelpful ways. Jamie uses this as a launch pad to try to understand the 'cultural religion' of our moment: What are our ‘articles of faith’, our ‘objects of worship’ in this culture? What or who are the gods amongst us?"

This Sunday we were joined by Ian Wardle. Ian once led the youth work at this church before beginning mission work in Uganda, and is now Team Leader of Kampala International Church. Drawing upon Matthew's Gospel and the Letter to the Philippians, Ian brings an honest assessment of how anxiety and worries are common to all of us in the very real struggles of our lives. However, the words of Jesus and the Apostle Paul offer more than sympathy; They bear the promise of God's Spirit to impact us in power, towards genuine transformation and faith.

This Sunday we gathered together for an all-age service with an environmental theme: Oceans. In Scripture, the seas and oceans are places of chaos and uncertainty. But as the first chapter of Genesis describes, they are also the place from where new life bursts into existence! It is here that God's Spirit hovers and 'broods', calling forth a new creation. We reflected on how Creation reveals the Creator to us, and looked specifically at a local environmental project with global significance.

Getting a sense of the wonderful gifts of God and His vision for our lives will equip us to break out of a mindset of fear or lack, and embrace the adventure that He calls us to.

We were deeply blessed to be joined by Sarah Butler, leader (along with her husband Matt) of Bognor Regis Salvation Army. God is a 'Missionary': Throughout Scripture, and ultimately in Jesus, God goes to His creation to save and restore. Sarah shared about our call to join in with that missionary task - not simply as an 'activity' of the church, but as its whole reason for being and the central focus of what it means to be a disciple. She explored three principle 'directions' in this lifestyle ('Up', 'In' and 'Out') modelled by Jesus.

In a partner message to our Easter Sunday talk, Jamie unpacks how the idea of ‘Justice’ fits in with the vision of Grace and Forgiveness revealed by the Cross and Empty Tomb. He suggests that rather than being opposite forces to balance somehow, God’s Love and Justice are intertwined and indivisible; They call us to a creative way of being in order to ‘do justice’ in the world.
