Message: Cain and Abel 3: Hate and Love - Jamie Fredricks

We continue our detailed study of Genesis and the story of Cain and Abel by reflecting further on the Bible’s radical call to love. Time and again, Scripture affirms that the ‘vertical’ problem of our alienation from the divine cannot be separated from the ‘horizontal’ problem of disconnection from one another. The solution is most perfectly expressed in the teaching of Jesus, who calls us to an extraordinary sacrificial love. Whether manifested in spectacular or everyday, mundane ways, this Christlike love is the power which can decisively change our world.

We return to our series going through the book of Genesis, picking up where we left off with Adam & Eve newly exiled from the Garden. The trauma of this situation is immediately explored in the story of their first sons, Cain and Abel. In this introductory message, Jamie explores the motif of ‘Sacrifice’: its power in shaping the human condition and the fundamental challenges we face when we feel our sacrifice has been ‘rejected’.

While we wouldn’t want to be bored, most people would choose order and predictability over anxiety and turmoil any day!

However, life has a habit of throwing change and uncertainty at us. Jamie suggests that trying to fight uncertainty ‘tooth and nail’ or force it back into neat categories may be an unhelpful strategy - and one that doesn’t fit with the biblical witness. Instead, Faith calls us to Trust in something outside (and higher) than our own comprehension… And to make peace with a ‘certain uncertainty’.

While we wouldn’t want to be bored, most people would choose order and predictability over anxiety and turmoil any day!

However, life has a habit of throwing change and uncertainty at us. Jamie suggests that trying to fight uncertainty ‘tooth and nail’ or force it back into neat categories may be an unhelpful strategy - and one that doesn’t fit with the biblical witness. Instead, Faith calls us to Trust in something outside (and higher) than our own comprehension… And to make peace with a ‘certain uncertainty’.

But here we can take encouragement from the example of Jesus, who himself ‘grew’ and developed to become the man he was born to be. More generally, the New Testament offers a model of of ‘becoming’ rooted in incremental, organic growth, but also in community. Using the example of prophecy, Jamie examines how we can only reach maturity in our lives and giftings if we work together.

At the start of a New Year it is perhaps natural to look ahead, and make plans or resolutions. Jamie focuses in on the reality that we are always on a journey: always engaged in an experience of progress and process. But here we can take encouragement from the example of Jesus, who himself ‘grew’ and developed to become the man he was born to be. More generally, the New Testament offers a model of of ‘becoming’ rooted in incremental, organic growth, but also in community. Using the example of prophecy, Jamie examines how we can only reach maturity in our lives and giftings if we work together.
