Message: Capacity. Dignity. Responsibility. - Jamie Fredricks
This week Jamie focused on the account in Genesis 1 of the creation and unique calling of humankind. These passages make some profound claims that are absolutely central to some of the most important issues that face us in the 21st century. Primarily we considered the assertion that humans are made in the ‘image and likeness’ of God: What would this have meant to an ancient audience, and what might we infer regarding the status and purpose of human beings? Secondly, we looked at what might be implied by the mandate to ‘subdue’ and ‘rule’ the created world. Tragically, these phrases have been used to excuse environmental exploitation. However, this is totally at odds with the character and commandments of God as revealed though the rest of Genesis 1, which instead leads us to good news summed up as capacity, dignity, and responsibility.

Our Position in Christ (Ian Wardle, 4th June 2023)
Tuesday Jun 06, 2023
Tuesday Jun 06, 2023
This week, our guest speaker from Youthworx Africa, Ian Wardle, talks to us about how as Christians we are not immune to treating people differently according to their positions and their perceived privilege in the church. He reminds us that in fact what really matters are our positions in Christ, being loved and held in him, equally.

Forming. Filling. Overflowing. (Jamie Fredricks, 28th May 2023)
Wednesday May 31, 2023
Wednesday May 31, 2023
This week we continued our series through Genesis, looking at the six days of Creation. Once again we tried to approach these famous verses with fresh eyes, noticing their careful and artful construction, all pointing to some beautiful insights into the character of God. Jamie commented on how God creates by separating and gathering, but also by filling with teeming, overflowing life. In this we might see echoes of the opening verses - the interaction of guiding order and wild potential. The interplay between these elements perhaps encourages us to seek a more nuanced understanding of the world, resisting black and white interpretations. And thus to navigate our way, we should pray for the gift that Scripture constantly points us towards… Wisdom!

Order. Chaos. Speech. (Jamie Fredricks, 21st May 2023)
Wednesday May 24, 2023
Wednesday May 24, 2023
We continued our new series exploring the book of Genesis, building on last week's introduction to the background of the book. This week we looked at the iconic first stanzas that follow on from “In the beginning…” and started to unpack them in all their richness. The ‘ordering’ Spirit of God interacts with the ‘chaotic’ depths of possibility: An idea that resonates across many spheres of life. Jamie illustrated how these reveal a God who works sympathetically and lovingly with his creation. His power is displayed not in coercive domination, but in ordaining freedom, and calling the Creation into fullness of life and flourishing. It is the power that we see most decisively at the Cross, and in the person of Jesus.

Speak Life: The Good News According to Genesis
Wednesday May 17, 2023
Wednesday May 17, 2023
We began a new series exploring one of the most well known, controversial, misunderstood, cryptic, deep, transformative, wise, mysterious, frustrating, wonderful, hope filled, mind blowing books of the Bible… Genesis!
Jamie set out some historical and technical background to this work and focussed in on the context in which it was finally assembled. The book of Genesis as we know it almost certainly emerged during and after the Babylonian exile: a period of almost unimaginable trauma for God’s people. Understanding this may help us to grasp the purpose of this book, and draw from it incredible pastoral wisdom for the traumas of our own lives.

Pushing Back & Pressing On
Wednesday May 10, 2023
Wednesday May 10, 2023
Rounding out our recent reflections on the post-resurrection stories of Jesus, we looked at the last two episodes of Matthews Gospel. The story of the guards being bribed to lie about Jesus’ body being stolen shows that from the very beginning, people have strained to come up with alternative explanations for the events of Easter. This is not simply a modern phenomena! The Resurrection confronts our settled categories and disturbs our world view… and we as Christians need to allow it to do so, despite this discomfort.
Finally, we looked at ‘the Great Commission’: a very human, but inspiring scene, that propels us out as missionaries to our lives and our worlds. We continued to look at the events related in the Gospels that happened after Jesus’ Resurrection. Jamie reflected on the women who first discovered the empty tomb: However, unfortunately the history of women in the church since then has often been one of marginalisation.
