In the ‘temptations’ of Matthew 4, the Devil offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, but only if Jesus ‘will bow before him’, endorsing the world’s way of power. Jesus rejects this, and spends the rest of his ministry proclaiming and enacting a very different Kingdom. While the ‘destinations’ might be the same, the ‘journey’ is entirely different, and we reflect on how Jesus’ rule and reign comes in a very distinctive way.
Ultimately, Matthew leads us in the final verses of his Gospel to the ‘Great Commission’, long a source of inspiration for Christians setting our upon the adventure of mission. The risen Jesus, now revealed as the King of God’s Kingdom bestows his authority and presence upon his followers; Jamie suggest this should be a cause of great confidence and creativity for us as we continue our journey to be ‘salt and light’ in the world.

Searching & Sifting: The Radical Kingdom (Jamie Fredricks, 10th September 2023)
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
In this latest message in our ‘Radical Kingdom’ series, Jamie reflects on some biblical insights into how we navigate our way as a community through complex issues. Picking up on last week’s theme of Justice, and the need for ‘healthy judgement’, we considered how various traditions (as well as scripture itself!) point us towards a nuanced engagement with the text. Looking at several parables in Matthew 13, we considered how Jesus seems to be encouraging us to walk a careful line between receiving the traditions of the past, being open to the new revelations of the present, and always being cautious about rushing in to make our own judgements too quickly!

Weightier: The Radical Kingdom (Jamie Fredricks, 3rd September 2023)
Tuesday Sep 05, 2023
Tuesday Sep 05, 2023
In Matthew 23, Jesus speaks directly to one of the most committed and conscientious religious communities of his day… and is utterly scathing! Is there something in the ‘religious mindset’ that can draw us into focussing on rule-keeping and wall-building? While the objects of this diligence may have value, Jesus’ words are a stark reminder that there are in fact “weightier”. “more important” matters that require our significant attention. Jamie draws out the implications of this in what we prioritise in our ministry as a church; And also in how we relate to one another, especially when it comes to disagreements over doctrine.

Raise a Black Flag: The Radical Kingdom (Jamie Fredricks, 27th August 2023)
Tuesday Sep 05, 2023
Tuesday Sep 05, 2023
Steve Jobs, the pioneer of tech giant Apple, once said ‘I’d rather be a pirate than join the navy’.
Still clearly not quite over this summer’s holiday club with its buccaneering theme… Jamie muses on the connection between small, radical movements on the fringes, and the power to effect revolutionary change. Jesus’ metaphors of salt, light, mustard seeds and yeast in the dough seem to underscore that it is the small and humble, rather than the mighty and powerful, that have real power for transformation. Drawing upon Anabaptist theology, Jamie illustrates the dangers of ‘establishment thinking’ and challenges us to rethink our perception of ‘the Holy’.
