In our final message on Genesis 4, we learn about what happens next to Cain and his descendants. This feels like a transitional section, moving from the ‘dreamlike’ stories of the Garden, to glimpses of the births of ancient civilisations. The mandate to rule and steward Creation has not been revoked, and these significant, creative image bearers of God engage in all manner of ingenuity. But they are living in the shadow of the Fall - the broken relationships which compromises our human endeavours. Amidst a situation of spiralling conflict, the God of Grace brings hope and new beginnings. There is another way… there are second chances… there is a different kind of Kingdom which turns the ‘way of the world’ upside down.

Message: Cain & Abel Pt 5: Civilisation? - Jamie Fredricks
In our final message on Genesis 4, we learn about what happens next to Cain and his descendants. This week Stuart speaks to us of how even the apostle Paul found that when he tried, in his natural human strength, to obey God's law, the equal and opposite law of human sinfulness made his attempts ineffective. However, he now rejoices in knowing that this old struggle is completely unnecessary. A new "law" has come into operation through Christ's dying and rising again: the "law" of the Holy Spirit at work within him, energising and enabling him in all areas of his life, which can now be lived to the full "in Christ Jesus".

As we continue our study through chapter 4 of Genesis, Jamie reflects on God’s reaction to Cain’s murderous act. Throughout the story, we see God’s character revealed as Love and Grace, and His essential movement as towards fallen human beings, even in the face of sin and rebellion. Jamie suggests the fear of authority in our own culture (while understandable) has become a distortion that robs us of wellbeing. We need instead to rediscover and share a fuller understanding of God’s loving lordship and Father-heart.
