Our Christmas series, ‘Feast’ is really all about celebration and worship! In the Christian calendar, and in life in general, there are certainly seasons for fasting, sorrow, and mourning. But as Jamie explores, this is not the same as the kind of dour, negative… grumpiness that religious people are often thought to embody - especially at Christmastime. Instead, the gospel should lead us to an effervescent, confident HOPE in the possibility of redemption for all things - even the trappings of Christmas that we might find silly, superficial, or tacky.
In this message, Jamie proposes an alternative strategy to find connections between these things and the wonderful truths of following Jesus, rooted in the imminence and presence of God. He offers some simple prayers and meditations so that as we journey through this season, the trappings of Christmas might become inspirations for constant praise and encouragement.

The Garden (Part 5): Exile & Grace (Jamie Fredricks, 19th November 2023)
Monday Nov 20, 2023
Monday Nov 20, 2023
In the final message of this section of our study through Genesis, we consider the remainder of chapter 3. Following the grave pronouncements over the Serpent, God turns to the man and woman. Jamie reflects on whether these ‘curses’ are a form of punishment, or simply a sad explanation of the consequences of human beings going their own way. This story calls to mind much of the anxiety and struggle that is characteristic of the human experience; But it also has elements of Grace and Hope, and sets up the wider themes of the good news.

The Garden (Part 4) (Jamie Fredricks, 12th November 2023)
Monday Nov 13, 2023
Monday Nov 13, 2023
In our on going Genesis series, we have been noticing how the famous account of ‘the fall’ illustrates a deteriorating situation of anxiety, distrust and strife. Perhaps fittingly for Remembrance Sunday, Jamie offers some meditations on the theme of ‘conflict’, linking these to some of the dynamics, and textual details, of ch3:8-15. The enmity between the seed of the woman and that of the snake is seen in a wider symbolic context - the struggle between good and evil; A struggle which, as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn correctly identified, runs through the heart of every human being.

The Garden (Part 3) (Jamie Fredricks, 5th November 2023)
Monday Nov 06, 2023
Monday Nov 06, 2023
After last time’s introduction to Genesis chapter 3, Jamie starts to look in more detail at some of the linguistic and theological features of this famous passage - The Serpent, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, the nature of the temptation…
As ever, the emphasis needs to be on a deep and nuanced reading, taking care to note what Scripture actually says, and where we might be tempted to assume or infer details. Not all these inferences are wrong… But we need to perhaps hold them with an appropriate ‘lightness’. As we delve into the rich and resonant story, and all the tantalising details and questions, we will be invited to ponder some of the deepest mysteries of the human condition.
